Whydah Pirate Ship Treasure Recovery

In February 1717 the Whydah and her cargo was captured by pirates led by "Black Sam" Bellamy. Pirate Bellamy then claimed the Whydah as his flagship.

On April 26, 1717 during the Whydah's second journey, she fought a fierce storm, but lost her battle against the raging storm at sea. The ship wrecked ashore at Wellfleet, MA and tons of silver, gold and other treasures from the ship were lost.

The ship wreck was located in 1984 and the Whydah is the first authenticated pirate ship in the world. The recovered gally bell is clearly marked as belonging to the Whydah, which has been the authenticating factor determining the wreck to be that of the Whydah.

Although the ships bell has been recovered, a vast amount of the Whydah's ship wreck treasure and artifacts are still lost at sea. The artifacts of the Whydah cover an estimated area of 40,000 square feet of sea floor. Arrr!

Sail to Historical Lighthouses

Lighthouses are a favorite destination for many seagoing adventures, and especially when you desire to take in a bit of history on your sailing trips. Packed with both character and purpose, lighthouses represent a long era and history of inspiration from sea to shining sea.

Dating back to 280 BC lighthouses stand the test of time, strong sea winds and storms due to their style of architecture. If you appreciate lighthouses you'll most likely want to include some lighthouse tours in your sailing adventures.

Not able to sail to your favorite lighthouse? Surf on over to Lighthouse Getaway and enjoy the various lighthouses featured on their site.

Watching the Killer Whales

Rising from the water at sunset and diving to the depths of the sea, the killer whales are truly king of the sea. They are magnificent creatures and mighty in strength. If you like to go whale watching but don't have an opportunity to do so anytime soon, take a 4 minute break to view the killer whales in this video.

When you finish watching the video, if you would like to see an awesome shark video, surf on over to one of our older posts here on Tall Sails Adventure. There is a story about a young boy named Volney Beckner who fought off a shark to save a little girl. Have fun at sea as you surf Tall Sails Adventure for more stories and fish tails tales!

Tall Ships Victoria Maritime Festival

The Tall Ships Victoria Maritime Festival in the British Columbia area would be an event not to miss! Included in the fleet of tall clipper ships attending the event is the Lady Washington, the Hawaiian Chieftain, the Pacific Grace and many others.

The Tall Ships Victoria Maritime Festival would be a wonderful place to take your kids so they can develop enthusiasm and respect for the wonderful clipper ships from a bygone era.

Wind Surfing Course

If you would like to learn wind surfing, you can either go at it alone, get some assistance from a friend wind surfing with you, or in this case learn how to wind surf by video and online.

The US Sailing site has basic keelboat training. You might want to also sail over to this instructional information for wind surfing and sailing. Now is the time to educate yourself about wind surfing so you'll be ready to make a go at it once Summer comes around.

Mermaid Tall Tale Song

Here at Tall Sails Adventure we promise you some tall tales, and mermaid stories are tall tails tales so we can't resist talking about them. Mermaids are most likely a tall tale from the imagination of man, although there are some videos online that claim otherwise.

This mermaid song is fun and in my opinion the two men who sing the song have good voices. I especially like the sound of the deep bass. That's bass as in the octave, not bass as in fish - lol. Sit back and enjoy this video about mermaids, and yes they do sing more words than just mermaids, mermaids, mermaids!

Tall Sailing Bed and Breakfast Clipper Ship

When it comes to going out of town I have to say that bed and breakfasts are my favorite for accommodations, and especially if they serve up a delicious breakfast! One of my fascinations with clipper ships is because they are a romantic type of structure with tons of character.

With that being said, I couldn't resist sharing what I found this morning. Traverse Tall Ship Company has a floating bed and breakfast on Traverse Bay located on the Great Lakes. Now this is the ultimate trip for your kids! Fun and rustic, you couldn't possibly go wrong with this tall sailing adventure.

Although bunk beds might not be the ultimate accommodations for adults, if you have kids this would be an absolute top rated fun adventure for them. You can however also sleep out on the deck under the stars if you take your sleeping bags - just don't plan on doing any sleepwalking!

For a bed and breakfast it certainly is reasonably priced, so you couldn't possibly go wrong with planning a fun vacation on the floating bed and breakfast. If a floating bed and breakfast may not be your cup of tea, then you may wish to charter one of their tall sailing ships. At 114 feet in length, the Manitou is one of the largest sailing ships In Traverse Bay.

Arrr - it's time to set sail for now. We'll see you when you visit us here again at Tall Sails Adventure!

Pirate Treasure Hunt with Lego Pirates

Pirate fantasy treasure hunts are fun for all ages and this is one pirate treasure hunt your kids will really enjoy. In less than five minutes your kids will see the golden treasure trunk unburied and glowing with pure gold! On the other hand, as adults it's fun for us too! Arrr!

Thursday

Weeki Wachee Mermaids

Mermaids are always a fantasy for water-loving guys who dream of finding a mate who loves the water. The Weeki Wachee Mermaids have been swimming around for over sixty years to keep the mermaid tails tales alive.

Since October 13, 1947 the Weeki Wachee Mermaids have been performing underwater ballet and entertaining many people wishing that mermaids were reality. In the 1950s, Weeki Wachee became one of the nation’s most popular tourist stops, which is no surprise since mermaids don't wear much clothing.

If you're wanting to take a break from reality, mermaids will certainly get your imagination running wild!

Tuesday

Lady Washington our State Ship

There are many great clipper ships and clipper ship replicas to talk about, but I couldn't in my right conscience forget the Lady Washington! After all, she has been declared the official ship of the State of Washington -- my home state! :-)

The original Lady Washington was the first American ship to visit Hong Kong, Honolulu and Japan. A full reproduction of the original built in the 1750's, the new Lady Washington was launched in 1989.

Many of you may not know that the Lady Washington was the star of the show for the Pirates of the Caribbean! She was the Black Pearl - of course, but that was not her first appearance in movies. Be sure to sail on over and read about the Lady Washington!

Lights Out in the Clipper City

Tall clipper sailing ships require a high degree of maintenance. Unfortunately that leads to the need for significant funds to keep a tall sailing ship afloat.

The Clipper City, which was built in 1985 is a replica of a ship that carried lumber to ports of the East Coast in the 19th century. The famous 158-foot long, two-masted schooner is now in need of repairs and can no longer sail -- so for now it's lights out in the Clipper City! :-( (Update: Things have changed since this original writing. Check out the Clipper City now!)

In her normal routine, the Clipper City was providing residents and tourists of Baltimore with the wonderful cruise experience of sailing under tall sails.

Hopefully the Clipper City will return to Baltimore, but the future of the clipper ship is not yet known as it is currently owned by a bank and is up for sail sale.

We wish the best to the Clipper City as a proud and tall sailing clipper ship!

One Man Sailing Back Through Time

It's always interesting to learn how someone became fascinated with the grace and strength of the old clipper ships. In "Sailing Back Through Time" Kent recalls how he as a 7 year old was influenced by his experience to grow fond of the wonderful tall sailing ships.

From his experience of growing up on the East Coast, and as he now resides in Chesapeake Bay, I'm sure you will find "Sailing Back Through Time" interesting.

As you depart here to read Kent's story I'll say "bon voyage" for now, but we hope you will sail back to Tall Sails Adventure again soon!

Correction: It's actually called, "Sailing Back in Time", but it's still the same great sailing story!

What Sailing Knot to Know - Bowline

First in our series of "What Sailing Knots to Know" is the "Bowline". The bowline knot, aka as the "loop knot" is considered to be the favorite for a yachtsman! It is essential for sailing and was first identified when found on an ancient Egyptian ship during an excavation.

Watching this animation of the bowline knot shows how easy it is to make a bowline knot. Special thanks to Apparent-Wind at the link above for providing the bowline knot image shown here. Be sure to click above to watch their animation of the bowline knot!

One reason the knot is a favorite is because it won't jam, and it's also easy to undue the knot if there is knot not a load on it. Although it generally is considered to be a reliable knot, please note that under some conditions it may not always hold.

We hope you enjoyed the first in our series of "What Sailing Knot to Know" and learned how to do a bowline knot.

Monday

Tall Ships Heading for the Harbor

"Sailing into which harbor?" you may be asking, and "When?" The tall ships, "Niagara", the "Schooner Madeline", and the "Pride of Baltimore II" will be heading into the harbor of Duluth, Minnesota on July 31st - August 4th, 2008.

The arrival of the tall ships will be for Minnesota's Maritime Festival and in celebration of Minnesota's 150 year anniversary. If you'll be in that area around those dates, you may wish to read the details about the tall ships heading into the harbor of Duluth, and especially because it's free!
