Boats Sunk in Pacific Northwest Wind Storm

December 2006:
In the Port of Tacoma, Washington a large old ship, which has served as a wind break for some time was blown out of the way by 70+ mph winds!

The wind then had her way with many of the boats within the marina. Some of the boats were washed ashore and run into the ground, while others sunk within their slips in the marina.

Wow, what a season of windy weather we have had here in the Pacific Northwest in the Puget Sound area! We have been experiencing very windy weather, which came to a climax last Thursday evening, and knocked out our power.

The sky was lit up many times that evening as transformers blew everywhere. Over a million people were left without power, and for some of us it took many days to get it restored. There are some that are still without power!

Tall full grown trees toppled, and fell onto houses, power lines, and crushed some cars. Unfortunately lives were also lost from trees crushing homes, and one woman in Seattle lost her life as mud slide caused a flash flood, which filled her basement. Seattle recorded over 2.17 inches of rain that day.

Between Tacoma and Gig Harbor the Tacoma Narrows bridge was closed and stranded motorists waited in their cars for six hours to cross once the bridge was reopened. North of here the 520 floating bridge was also closed. As a precaution the county opened the draw portion of the bridge to relieve some of the pressure, which is only ever done in the event of severe weather, which this was! As winds whipped through coupled with the force of the water, the 43 year-old bridge didn't fair too well and the force sheared massive bolts off that hold the bridge together, which required immediate repair before they could reopen.

It was the worst storm here in over a decade, and one I won't forget! I feel fortunate that my home was left unharmed by the storm and although we had many fallen tree limbs in our yard and on our roof, we didn't experience any fallen trees on our property.

Wow! What a storm!

Tribute to Laura Gainey from Picton Castle

December 8th, 2006:

Laura Gainey was washed overboard from the deck of the Barque Picton Castle. Unfortunately, she was not found. The search for her was called off when the clock passed the 36 hour maximum time-frame, at which time it was unlikely that one would survive hypothermia.

However, the Picton Castle continued the search beyond that time frame. Barque Picton Castle had placed a tribute to Laura on their website, but the link I previously provided here is no longer there.

Picton Castle Captain Moreland

Friday evening December 8th, 2006 aboard the Barque Picton Castle:

Laura Gainey was washed off the deck by a rogue wave! Captain Moreland has commented on the Barque Picton Castle site in regards to the event. (Sorry, but they no longer have the link on their site to the specific event).

It's a very tragic event, but to the men and women who have sailed the seas it is a known risk they all take.

The endless motion of mighty ocean waves is not a force that can be tamed. The oceans power is what makes sailing a thrilling adventure, but the adventure can also become a nightmare.

To a courageous woman like Laura, adventures on the high seas is what they live for, and for some the waves become the caretaker of their soul.

The search continued, but survival beyond the initial 36 hours due to hypothermia left little hope to find her. Unfortunately the odds are that Laura has most likely perished at sea.

They did find several garments of clothing, but sadly there was no sign of the young female sailor.

Gainey Still Lost at Sea

Daughter of the Canadian hockey manager Bob Gainey, Laura Gainey was still lost at sea after being washed overboard Friday evening December 2006 on board the Picton Castle.

Associated Press had a video covering the story. The concerns over hypothermia taking her life has grown. Unfortunately, all the links I provided to the story are no longer available.

Monday

Barque Picton Castle Woman Overboard!

You may have already heard the terrible news from Friday evening - December 2006: A 25 year old Canadian woman aboard the Barque Picton Castle was washed overboard by a rogue wave! CBC News stated Captain Moreland's report,
"The unidentified woman, who is Canadian and has some experience on boats, was on a shelter deck in the rear of the vessel, which Moreland said is considered a safe area."
Unfortunately, a search has not recovered the missing woman, but there is still possibly hope as she went overboard in warmer waters. Very disheartening news.

It certainly serves as a reminder to us all of how powerful the ocean really is, and even when one is on board such a magnificent sailing vessel as the Barque Picton Castle.

A Sail Boat Adventure

Time to consider some destinations for your sail boat adventure! Are you dreaming of drifting away in warm waters of an exotic coast? Here's a great place to surf over to on the Internet for some wonderful travel destinations where you can rent a condo for the price of a hotel!

With their specials that they run, you can get a bargain like a 3 nights and get 1 free in exotic destinations such as Cabo San Lucas. Or, you could get a 2 or 3 bdrm condo at Bahama Bay Resort near Disney World!

Whichever destination you would like to drift off to it sure sounds great in the midst of winter! Our Puget Sound waters here are quite cold so dipping my toe into the water at a place like Cabo San Lucas sounds very appealing right now!
